In My Will or Life Insurance

Leaving a donation in your will is a great way to add meaning to your life and ensure that your memory lives on into the future. You can provide for your family in your will, while also leaving a gift that can make a vital difference in the lives that follow.

When you make a legacy gift to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, you are making a statement about your commitment to the future of health care in your community and beyond.

The gift you make in your will can fund a specific program area or support the hospital’s highest-priority needs at the time your gift comes to fruition. This can include medical equipment and amenities (which are not funded by the government), redevelopment projects, or leading-edge research and education.

Regardless of the size of your legacy gift, it can be made as an outright gift for immediate impact, or endowed to allow for annual contributions. We welcome an opportunity to discuss the many ways you can leave a legacy.

Will/Bequest

The most common type of legacy gift is a charitable bequest made in a will, which can take the form of cash, securities, assets or donation of your estate.

Will Clauses

Bequests can be endowed or given as an outright cash gift. For endowed bequests, the capital will be invested and only the interest will be used annually to fund a particular hospital or program.

Endowment Clause

The following wording is recommended for endowed gifts:

“I give to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, currently located at 1 King Street West, Suite 702, Hamilton, Ontario L8P 1A4 ____ {percent of the residue or a specific amount} of my estate. It is my wish that these funds, if practical and possible, be endowed for {name of hospital} programs as determined by the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation from time to time.”

Outright Gift Clause

The following wording is recommended for outright gifts:

“I give to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, currently located at 1 King Street West, Suite 702, Hamilton, Ontario L8P 1A4 ____ {percent of the residue or a specific amount} of my estate. It is my wish that these funds, if practical and possible, be directed as an outright gift (not endowed) to be used for {name of hospital} program as determined by the Board of Directors of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation from time to time.”

Life Insurance

Charitable donations can be made through a life insurance policy in one of three ways:

  • Donating an existing life insurance policy, naming Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of the policy;
  • Purchasing a new policy designating Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation as the owner and beneficiary; or
  • Donating a policy through your will naming Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation as beneficiary.
