The unveiling and public announcement of the gift which enabled the art to be commissioned was timed to coincide with Mental Health Week.

The new additions to the courtyard are two four-foot penguin sculptures Grace and Anneke. They will be interactive and engaging, conveying the importance of family and a supportive community while helping to raise spirits. They have been installed in a contemplative space that is meant to offer a calming, peaceful experience. The clinical teams use this dedicated area to support patients on an individual and group basis, offering therapy sessions in the courtyard.

McMaster Children’s Hospital has one of the largest pediatric mental health programs in Canada, offering both inpatient services at the Main Street location, and outpatient services at Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre. The outpatient programs are an integral part of the continuum of care for patients, and the team at Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre have been able to offer improved and expanded programming for patients in the new purpose-built space.

“We are privileged to support such a meaningful initiative, especially with children’s mental health being the focus,” said McKeil president and CEO Steve Fletcher. “Making a difference matters to McKeil. And we’re happy to help Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre make a difference in the lives of the children and families who benefit from its care.”

“Having corporate partners, such as McKeil Marine, come forward to show their support for the mental health program helps to raise awareness of its importance and contributes to the effort to erase the stigma around mental health,” says Pearl F. Veenema, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation.
