The Best of Both Worlds with the Hybrid Operating Suite

Time is of the essence for resource nurses, who coordinate cases, ensure that required equipment and supplies are available, and provide support for complex cases. The campaign for the creation of a new Hybrid Operating Suite at Hamilton General Hospital will help increase efficiency for the cardiac and vascular resource nurses and the quality of care they provide.

“With a new Hybrid Operating Suite, both minimally invasive procedures and open surgeries will be performed in one room,” explains Nicole Freer, Senior Resource Nurse for Cardiac Surgery, Hamilton General Hospital.

Some patients require both minimally invasive procedures, which use wires and catheters guided through small incisions, as well as open procedures such as open heart surgeries. Patients could undergo both kinds of procedures without switching rooms.

“With a Hybrid Suite, important imaging software and controls for both types of procedures will be at our fingertips.”

Nicole is excited to see the new suite become a reality.

“It’s all about enhancing patient care,” she says. “That’s the most gratifying aspect of what I do.”
