Stoney Creek Woman is Patient Ambassador for Miracle Treat Day

HAMILTON, ON: Avery Williams of Stoney Creek battled a rare form of cancer called retinoblastoma when she was 3 months old. Nearly two years after being in remission, she found herself at McMaster Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with significant hearing loss that resulted from the cancer.

Avery began her ongoing care with the Audiology Department of McMaster Children’s Hospital when she was fitted with her first hearing aid at the Chedoke campus. Her hearing was monitored regularly and she frequently required new listening devices as she grew. Now 19, Avery will continue to receive ongoing care for the rest of her life through the Audiology Department.

“The audiology team has been a godsend for our family,” says Avery’s mother, Ericka. “They’ve been such a big part of our lives and we’re grateful for their knowledge and compassion.”

Thankful for the care she received, Avery was selected to represent McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation as a Patient Ambassador for the 15th annual Miracle Treat Day. On August 10, participating Dairy Queen® locations in Hamilton, Brantford, Simcoe, St. Catharines and the Niagara Region will donate the net proceeds from every Blizzard® Treat sold to McMaster Children’s Hospital, one of 14 children’s hospitals across Canada supported by Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). Funds will support the purchase of equipment, redevelopment initiatives, research and education of staff at McMaster Children’s Hospital and its associated programs.

Avery will be serving Blizzard® Treats at the 233 Dundas St. E. location in Waterdown from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Since the partnership between Dairy Queen and Children’s Miracle Network began in 1984, Dairy Queen has become a top contributor with $125 million raised to date across North America. For more information about Miracle Treat Day, visit MiracleTreatDay.ca.
