New Inpatient Unit for World-Class Pediatric Care
Everyone at McMaster Children’s Hospital had a big reason to celebrate on September 10 with the official opening of The Joyce Family Foundation Inpatient Unit. A portion of the transformational gift from The Joyce Family Foundation to McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation enabled the complete redevelopment of this space, which is a state-of-the-art unit with 23 individual patient rooms. The unit will have nine complex-care rooms and 14 general pediatric rooms.
“Mr. Joyce would light up when meeting MacKids and their families,” says Maureen O’Neill from The Joyce Family Foundation. “Seeing them smile despite their challenges had special meaning to him, which makes this celebration and seeing the impact of his giving so significant.”
The large patient rooms are located along the unit’s perimeter to allow for as much natural light as possible. This is an important feature in providing the most comfortable and welcoming spaces possible for patient care, which encompasses both physical and mental well-being and is meant to give families a sense of privacy and personal space.
The unit also includes a “Care by Parent” suite which provides parents with an environment in which they can learn how to provide specialized care to their children with complex needs, in a setting with clinical support. The modern collaboration spaces and conference rooms for physicians and staff are also an important part of the new unit.
“We are extremely grateful to The Joyce Family Foundation for making this Inpatient Unit possible,” says Pearl Veenema, President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. “It is a wonderful tribute to Ron Joyce’s passion for children’s health care. The inpatient unit will make a real difference in patients’ lives well into the future.”
