A Message of Gratitude From CEO Pearl Veenema

June 10, 2020

To our valued donor community,

My colleagues and I are extremely grateful for your generous support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your gifts, which have included financial contributions and donations of personal protective equipment (PPE) and food, have meant so much to the frontline workers who are working tirelessly to support patients. Thank you for your kindness, which has touched many hearts during these stressful times.

As the crisis continues to evolve, The Foundation team is adapting in ways that allow us to continue fundraising for the important equipment needed across Hamilton Health Sciences. Foundation fundraising events like MacKids Walk & Wheel and Strides For The General have gone virtual, which is enabling us to engage donors in fun and innovative ways. To learn more about these fundraisers, as well as other events and opportunities to raise funds for The Foundation, please visit our website.

Beyond Hamilton Health Sciences’ COVID-19 response, essential services continue while other services and programs are gradually restarting to meet patients’ needs. The vital work of The Foundation must go on, as the need for excellent health care and equipment continues to grow.

Your support of The Foundation is helping patients like Phoenix, who was only six weeks old when he developed a fever and a bad cough. Soon, Phoenix was having difficulty breathing. He was taken to the Emergency Department at McMaster Children’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Thanks to the care he received, Phoenix’s symptoms were controlled and he fully recovered. His mother, Katherine, is grateful to the health care experts at the Hospital for helping her son during such a critical time. Donor support helped to ensure that the care providers had the right tools at their fingertips when needed most.

At this time, I also want to reflect on the demonstrations of the last few weeks. As Canadians, we are committed to working together for a brighter future and helping to make racism a thing of the past. Much work remains to be done, and I encourage each of you to take steps in creating a more inclusive society.

A commitment to diversity and inclusion is fundamental to our values as an organization, and as a community. Together, we must work harder to address these ongoing challenges. We recognize that these are stressful times for many, and we are touched and grateful for the many acts of kindness that we have seen throughout this crisis. COVID-19 has brought us together in many ways, while simultaneously keeping us apart. Let’s bring that same spirit of community and caring to our everyday lives.

Thank you again for making a difference. Please click here to download a poster that expresses The Foundation’s gratitude for the community’s tremendous generosity during the pandemic. Where appropriate, we encourage you to post it in any home or work setting to proudly show your support!

Stay safe and healthy, and all our best wishes to you and your loved ones.
