Gunshot Survivor Rallies Community Around Hospital Fundraiser

HAMILTON, ON: Brandon Clark from Hamilton will never forget April 12, 2015. He was at a friend’s house when he heard a knock on the door.

“A total stranger was standing there with a shotgun,” says Brandon. “He shot two of us before turning the gun on himself.”

Rushed to Hamilton General Hospital, Brandon underwent emergency surgery in the Trauma Centre to stop the bleeding and repair his injured pancreas. He had two more surgeries to remove his left kidney, resect his colon and seal his abdominal wall.

Brandon was discharged after a five-week stay at Hamilton General Hospital. The General is home to the busiest Trauma Centre outside of Toronto, caring for more than 840 patients last year.

“It took about a year before I felt like my old self,” says Brandon. “The experience has changed me for the better and I’m determined not to take anything in life for granted.”

Grateful for the level of care he received, Brandon decided to give back and fundraise in support of Hamilton General Hospital Foundation as a Strides For The General Patient Ambassador, along with three other grateful patients. Brandon is sharing his story to inspire community support for the event.

Hamilton General Hospital Foundation’s eighth annual Strides For The General, presented by Medtronic, will be held on Saturday, September 15 at Bayfront Park in Hamilton. The event features a 5K walk, timed 5K and 10K runs, complimentary breakfast and lunch, live music, participant medals, and prizes for top fundraisers and finishers. All proceeds will support Hamilton General Hospital, including the Regional Rehabilitation Centre.

Thanks to the tremendous support of participants and event sponsors, past proceeds from Strides For The General have purchased more than 60 pieces of essential equipment, directly benefiting patients today. As a leading teaching hospital, it is also important to ensure that the latest equipment is available for the education of future medical practitioners.

Building on last year’s success, the event has set a goal to attract more than 700 registrants and raise a minimum of $150,000. Since 2011, the event has grossed more than $940,000 with the goal of exceeding $1 million in 2018.

Both individuals and teams are encouraged to participate in the event. All participants who register by July 31 will receive a super-early-bird registration discount.
