“We believe you and we’re here to support you.”
These are the comforting words of Laura Smith, the Nurse Facilitator for the Sexual Assault / Domestic Violence Care Centre (SA/DVCC) at Hamilton Health Sciences. The SA/DVCC provides care for patients of all ages, with offices located at Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, and McMaster University Medical Centre.
“For survivors, having a warm and welcoming environment to receive care is important.”
“For many survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, power and control have been taken away from them,” explains Laura. “We aim to give some of that power back to patients by letting them choose their treatment options. We always respect our patients’ dignity and privacy during every step of the process.”
A generous donation from the Hamilton Naval Veteran’s Association will enhance the treatment room at The General.
“For survivors, having a warm and welcoming environment to receive care is important,” says Laura. “With this donation, we will be able to provide the necessary treatment in a more comfortable environment.”
