Hamilton, ON: On January 18, associates from Walmart stores across the region celebrated the launch of the 2018 Children’s Miracle Network Champions presented by Walmart Canada program. As part of the celebration, 13-year-old Ethan Zahn from Niagara Falls was announced as McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Patient Ambassador for the 2018 Champions program.
When he was seven years old, Ethan was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which is a chronic inflammatory condition of the intestinal tract. He visits McMaster Children’s Hospital every eight weeks for IV infusions and consults with his specialist every four months to manage the disease. Without treatment, Ethan would be in danger of suffering from malnutrition, unhealthy weight loss and severe abdominal pain. Ethan continues to flourish and enjoy life thanks to the team at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Champions presented by Walmart is an awareness program designed to educate communities about Children’s Miracle Network, the important work of its member hospital foundations including McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the financial needs of children’s hospitals. Children’s hospitals tackle the greatest challenges and see the most critical cases, and this program shines the light on this important work to facilitate the generation of financial support. The program honours remarkable children who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges, and offers them an opportunity to represent the millions of children treated annually at children’s hospitals across North America. The Canadian portion of the program will see 13 children from across the country travelling to Ottawa for a once-in-a-lifetime experience before traveling to Orlando for the #ChildrensHospitalsWeek conference in March 2018.
